Worth knowing before you design
Saddle stitch requires a page count in multiples of 4. Each folded sheet makes four pages. So 8, 12, 16, 20 — never 14 or 18. Check this before you start designing.
Count every page, including blank ones. The inside front cover counts even if nothing prints on it. Covers are normally pages 1 through 4.
Send single pages in order — not reader spreads. Don't pair pages 2 and 3 side by side. We handle imposition; pre-paired spreads have to be pulled apart first, which slows things down and invites errors.
On thicker booklets, inner pages push outward slightly and get trimmed a bit more than outer pages. Over about 32 pages, give your content extra room from the outside edge.
Choosing stock: 60lb offset white is the economical interior for text-heavy work and the right choice if anyone will write in it. 80lb and 100lb gloss text are better for photos and color. Pair with a 100lb gloss cover or 12pt cover for a piece that holds up.
